August 2024 Community of Interest Highlights

The Aging in Community Education & Research (ACER) Community of Interest provides a platform for sharing emerging trends, exchanging ideas/knowledge, and exploring research prospects within a relaxed informal setting. This platform allows organizations, and individuals including faculty, researchers, and students to connect and collaborate.

During our recent CI gathering on Thursday, 15th of August 2024, participants shared/discussed the following:

  • Discussed exploring a social media platform, such as a LinkedIn group, where they can share all the information.

  • Emphasized the importance of accessibility information, such as details about wheelchair availability and mobility aids. This information is crucial for older adults and their families. Having this information readily available in every medical center and doctor's office ensures that older adults can confidently navigate healthcare facilities without unnecessary stress or barriers. Providing clear and accessible information is a simple yet essential step in creating inclusive environments where older adults can access the healthcare they deserve with dignity and ease.

  • It is suggested to come up with a topic on aging for each community of interest session to discuss and develop a solution for.

  • Ginger Grant, Dean of Research and Innovation, suggested a field trip to the arboretum in the fall and proposed arranging a TED Talk next spring. She also updated us about her new publication, a chapter titled 'The Chair Rock,' which addresses fighting ageism in the workforce.

  • Pat Spadafora suggested a speaker series featuring the participants in the future.

Please note:

The next Community of Interest (CI) gathering is set for noon from 12 to 1 pm on Thursday, September 19th, 2024. We extend an invitation to anyone eager to participate in this important dialogue. Whether you're a researcher, practitioner, student, or dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for older adults in our communities, your perspectives and experiences are greatly valued. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of older adults and the communities that embrace them.
