The Aging in Community Education & Research (ACER) Community of Interest provides a platform for sharing emerging trends, exchanging ideas/knowledge, and exploring research prospects within a relaxed informal setting. This platform allows organizations, and individuals including faculty, researchers, and students to connect and collaborate.

Community of Interest (CI) occurs every third Thursday of the month. Please click here to join the email list and to stay informed.

A highlight of our recent conversation held on 20 June 2024 was

  1. Bradley Schurman the author of “SUPER AGE” book will return to Humber for another in-person event in November and will also be facilitating another fireside chat in the fall.

  2. Suggestion was made for an in-person event, perhaps in October – International Month of Older Persons.

  3. Doris Hanlon (ADM Accessibility) talked about her company and the accessibility lifts and construction. She also mentioned a new collaborative research project with Humber that will focus on automation in accessibility by integrating it into Google Home or other services.

  4. Marianne Klein – CEO of Shalom Village in Hamilton talked about the programs at Shalom and their plans.

  5. Costs of retirement homes, long-term care, and aging in one’s own home were part of the discussion.

  6. Conversations about the built environment have been a recurring theme at the Community of Interest and we expect it will continue to be part of future conversations.

  7. The discussion on supporting older congregation members led to conversations about the benefits and drawbacks of using technology for online worship participation.

The next virtual conversation will be on July 18th, 12 PM – 1 PM.
